Travelling with infants and toddlers can be one of the most challenging parts of the air travel experience for families. A recent research study by TH Airport Consulting explores the services and facilities passengers with young children (ages 0–3) need to enjoy a smoother and more memorable airport journey. Based on surveys of both passengers and European airports, the study highlights key pain points across the entire travel experience—from check-in and security screening to boarding, in-flight comfort, and baggage reclaim.
The research reveals that while many airports provide basic family services such as changing rooms and priority security lanes, significant gaps remain. Parents frequently struggle with handling baggage and baby equipment, finding nursing areas, and keeping children entertained during long waits. Nearly 40% of surveyed passengers required extra assistance during their journey, yet many reported not receiving adequate support from airport or airline staff.
To improve the passenger experience for families flying with young children, the study recommends enhanced staff training, clearer guidance for parents, rental baby equipment at airports, dedicated play zones near stress points, and better access to family-friendly facilities. These improvements can reduce stress for parents while creating a more family-friendly and inclusive airport environment.
